Pretty hard to compete in the big league when you only bring a minor league team to the game. Can think of a few who have tried: shamrock, roma, mbm, and going back a ways, zellerback paper, am lewis, and a few others that didn't make enough of an impression to remember their names. I don't think either company sucks. They both have their own problems. From my perspective its management and ordertakers. (not salesmen). From sales it's management and labor. And from Management, it's everybody, EXCEPT themselves. |

Reply with quote | #212 | Sysco and USF in So Cal are both in trouble. Business is down and both management teams have no idea how to get things turned around. USF Corporate doesn't know which of three warehouses it will close. Sysco is managed by a former bean counter.
I think Gordon Foods or Ben E. Keith might find home in So Cal. Especially if KKR/CD&R start selling of pieces of USF.
Shamrock has tried two or three times to break into the So Cal market. Dismal failures all three times!
Goldberg needs to replace their overcrowded little warehouse in Vernon if the want to be more than just a niche player. Good COP program, but otherwise nothing to speak of.
Until Roma and PFG are integrated into a real broadliner, Roma will just be a pizza distributor. PFG needs to move out of the East and make all the Roma warehouses broadliners.
Zellerbach (I haven't heard that name in years) waas Crown-Zellerbach's aborted attempt to become a food distributor.
A.M. Lewis (another blast from the past) was mostly in the Inland Empire area of So Cal. They were acquired by S.E. Rykoff in the mid-80s.
MBM is a systems house. They have never tried to be a broadline, street house. They do what they do very well.

Reply with quote | #213 | Fear is running rampant throughout this division, there are so many people from so many departments actively looking for other jobs, it's scary.
Senior staff members no longer greet you in the hallways and exchange the usual good morning, how are you banter, etc... now they just pass you by with wide eyed looks of fear on their faces as they run from meeting to meeting.
We have all griped about this division over the past year, but I will say right now it is the absolute worst I have ever seen it, which does not make me happy with the Holidays right around the corner. I come for will calls or credit issues, meetings etc.. then I can't wait to get back out of there again.
This division has become so bogged down through mandatory reports, new software and training/tracking programs, all too much administrative crap we all have to do now and it is killing us from top to bottom.
When will our owners see the current business model is a complete and utter failure?

Maybe it's time to think about your future and your financial responsbility to yourself and your family , if you have one. Maybe it's time to start doing what the rest of your division is doing, LQQK for stable employment. From what I read and hear out there, your division is sinking and fast. The first to leave a sinking ship are the rats. Get out while your still in dry dock. Otherwise, make sure you know where your life vests are stored. Anton, this place is going downhill faster than an Olympic skier. Just hang around will call and listen to the gripes. It's not just the veterans, either. A lot of the new people feel it, too.
All this emphasis on Linc and all the worthless meetings that we have to attend (ie; Deep Dive, an appropriate name considering the direction we're going), are killing any spark that the sales force might have. How much time do we lose having to stop in the middle of the day to attend meetings?
Fred, Jon, Mike and Robert and the DSMs spend most of their days looking at Linc. What are they hoping to see?
You would think that KKR and CD&R being investment bankers would see that things are going south real quick at La Mirada. Maybe this is part of their master plan. Run down the business and sell it for cheap. Maybe they want to sell USF off piece by piece. Is that the reason there are now 8 regions instead of 4? __________________ Consultants have credibility because they are not dumb enough to work at your company |

Reply with quote | #216 | FSVET, why would your owners, KKR/CDR "Investment Bankers" pay exurbanite amount for an already failing company just to sell it off at a loss unless, they need the write off for the up coming year? Or maybe, since they are investment bankers and have already lost a tremendous amount in this economy, your right, it might be a good time to take your losses and RUN. Maybe someone will buy you and sell it off piece by piece and be done with it. IKY __________________ "Ignorance is curable, stupidity is forever." |

The sad thing about what’s happening in LA is the lost potential. USF LA has a lot of potential which is being wasted because of politics. LA is expected to make up for the failures of Corona and San Diego. These divisions get a pass on their budget and LA has to make up the difference. LA has to transfer business to these divisions, while continuing to deliver selected customers in the same areas. The situation is all one-sided in favor of the regions handpicked presidents in Corona and San Diego. The real question is how long will corporate sit by and watch this continue. Maybe this is the year San Diego and Corona get the budget they deserve. The region need to back off LA and focus on the problems in Corona and San Diego! __________________ USF sucks |

Reply with quote | #220 | Let's see, this week USF Los Angeles fired 2 E&S specialists, 1 E&S billing clerk, 1 marketing person and a union guy who worked the mailroom.
Then one of the best category managers puts his resignation in and he is promptly walked off the property.
I am speechless, really. Might as well order a truck load of 4x8 plywood sheets and board this baby up!
The alarm has been sounded we are listing heavily to our port side, find a life boat and get in it before you go down with what was once a top notch company.

Reply with quote | #223 | Wasn't it just three weeks ago at the sales meeting that Jon headed a break-out session telling us that beef, pork and E&S are some of our highest GP$ generating categories? Now the very people who could help us grow this business are let go. What's next? USF Corporate and KKR/CD&R are closing and realigning the divisons on the East Coast. No telling how soon they'll repeat the process out here. Ecoli is spot on! If you have something to bring to the table you had better bring it before SYSCO takes it. Your value is in what you have to bring to the table. __________________ BLUE DESTROYS RED |
